Zabriskie Hike, Dante's View, Scotty's Castle

We completed three adventures today, a hike, a mountaintop view and a crazy mansion.

First, we left early to drop me off at the top of Zabriskie Point trail. It was on my Death Valley Bucket List to hike the 2.5 miles from Zabriskie Point down to Golden Canyon. While I was trekking, cranky knees screaming, Sam went down to Badwater for a walk on the salt flats, then came back to Golden Canyon to meet me. That hike was awesome! One of the world’s great short hikes!

We then proceeded up to the top of Dante’s View, about 6300 hundred feet above the valley on the east side. Great driving road too. Put the VW turbo Diesel through its paces….at times with velocity far exceeding the speed limit! Lunch on top, and a neat short hike along the spine of the crest, with magnificent views. Temperature was only 59, but with no wind it was great!

Then back down to Furnace Creek for a quick freshen-up then off to Scotty’s Castle, about an hour north. We had a chance to wander around the grounds for a few minutes before our 3:00 tour by the park service guide. This place is a fascinating tale of deception, extravagance and friendship.

By now the temperature was 93, We returned for a swim then had a very good pizza at the saloon.
