Santa Cruz to San Francisco

Whew! Just dragged ourselves back to our hotel after a really fun dinner at Bubba Gumps Shrimp place at the end of Pier 39 in San Francisco. We'd just completed a harbor tour. It's cold and windy, although sunny, and we are frozen to the bone! But the Blog calls................

We left Santa Cruz this morning and continued on our way north on route 1. Many spectacular views of the coastline along the way. Lots of state parks and beaches. The highlight of the drive was to come upon the Pidgeon Point Lighthouse. Very scenic! The lighthouse had been turned over to the state of California a few years ago by the US Lighthouse Service. The state is now in the process of a capital campaign to completely restore it. Quite a project!

We stopped for lunch at Jersey Joe's in Half Moon Bay. A truly memorable cheeseburger! Continuing on Rt 1 and into San Francisco proper. From the highway, it looks unlike any city I know! The hillsides are crowded with box-like tiny homes in pastel colors. Odd.

We found our hotel easily. Its  a Best Western known as the Tuscan, just two blocks off the waterfront and Fisherman's Wharf. This place has more amenities than what we're used to, including valet parking, a knowledgeable concierge and a free wine party from 5-6 in the lobby!

After our free wine, and a visit with some other tourists, we headed off to the waterfront. We immediately arranged to take a one hour cruise around SF Bay, which promised a stop under the Golden Gate Bridge and a trip around Alcatraz Island. the wind was howling so it was not comfortable to stand on deck for very long. As we headed out to the bridge, we entered a gloomy fog bank. We were disappointed that we would not be able to see the bridge. But was we approached, the sun broke through and there it was! Magnificent! And the photo op was complimented by the appearance of a big container ship.

We continued around Alcatraz Island which is quite a depressing looking place as you might expect. Upon return to the dock we headed out to the end of the Pier 39 for our dinner (and to get warm).

Awesome lunch!
