We left Boise at a reasonable hour this morning, breakfast at the Star Cafe, then detoured (don't ask why) through Caldwell and Wilder before heading south out into the wild. This is the first day of our two week road trip. We'll go to Death Valley tomorrow for three days, then across central California to Rte 1 up the coast and Big Sur, spend two days in San Francisco, through the Napa Valley, a day or two in Reno and home by May 3rd. Should be about 2000 miles. The Golf makes a great road trip car!

| Jordan Valley Church |
In Jordan Valley we checked out the old Methodist Church. That congregation was closed last year and they sold the building to High Desert Bible Church. The building still looks good - a bunch of us from Emmett painted it a few years ago. We stopped for a roadside lunch/snack in the thriving little burg of Basque, OR on Rt 95. Then on down to Winnemucca for ice cream. (We didn't find our favorite Dairy Queen so had to settle for Jack in the Box - not the same). The air is very smokey. We heard on the radio that it was smoke from a big fire in Siberia (!)

Arrived in Battle Mountain around 5:00PM at a Super 8. After a dip in their indoor pool, a nice dinner at the Owl Restaurant, the only eatery in town, other than fast food.
